Types of Vascular Diseases that can Impact your Life

The vascular system, also known as the circulatory system, plays a critical role in the human body. This system is in charge of transporting lymph and blood throughout the body. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients all over the body via the veins and arteries. These vessels also help in removing tissue waste matter. Dr. Eugene Tanquilut Tinley Park cautions that when your vascular system is affected by diseases, you will develop many complications in your arteries, vessels, and veins that can negatively impact your life. Let’s look at some of the vascular diseases that you can contract.

    Aneurysm

An aneurysm causes bulges inside the walls of blood vessels in the body. It is mainly found in the aorta, the main blood vessels coming from the heart.

You can get a thoracic that affects the aortic aneurysm around the chest area or an abdominal aneurysm that affects the belly.

When the aneurysm is still tiny in the body, it may not pose any threat. However, when left untreated, it may cause other complications such as blood clots, plaque deposits, and press on other organs in your body, leading to pain.

    Peripheral Artery Disease

After the coronary arteries have supplied blood to your heart muscles, the peripheral arteries will take over and move blood to other body organs and tissue. Both coronary and peripheral arteries could develop fat deposits, cholesterol, and other substances inside the walls known as plaque.

Over time, as plaque builds up, your blood vessels will become narrow and, as a result, affect blood flow. Additionally, plaque buildup could block the blood flow or rupture the vessels.

Blockage in the coronary artery could lead to heart attack and chest pain. A blockage could also affect your kidney, and you will likely develop heart failure, stroke, and high blood pressure.

    Lymphedema

The lymphatic system in your body is created without a pump. It relies solely on the muscle contractions and valves inside the vessels to keep the lymph moving.

When nodes and vessels are not working appropriately or missing, a buildup of fluids will occur, causing some swelling in the legs and arms. This is a condition referred to as lymphedema.

If you were born with an absence of particular lymph vessels, on the one hand, you may develop primary lymphedema. On the other hand, you may develop complications inside the tubes.

Secondary lymphedema may occur when there is a pause or blockage in your lymphatic system. This may happen because of an infection, scar tissue formation, surgery, serious injury, deep vein thrombosis, cancer, and cancer medication.

    Buerger’s Disease

Buerger’s disease is rare and mainly impacts the small and medium veins and arteries inside the legs and arms. When these vessels are affected, they will start to form clots, thereby cutting off blood supply to the feet, fingers, toes, and hands. These body parts will begin to experience pain even when you are taking a rest. In severe cases, you might start to lose your toes and fingers.

The leading cause of these diseases is unknown, but doctors attribute it to smoking, especially chewing tobacco and using cigars.

As you can see, many diseases can affect your vascular system, requiring specialized treatment to ensure your internal organs operate smoothly. At Vascular Specialists, you will get a wide range of treatments, including regenerative medicine, and surgery procedures. You can learn more by calling the office line or setting up an online appointment to discuss your condition.
