Director Michael Chaves said the events featured in The Conjuring 3 made the horror film the darkest. For the first time since a series based on true events began, director James Wan is stepping down from directing duties.
Chaves took over the direction and wanted to take it in a new direction. In 2013, Wan introduced the characters Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) to the audience. In real life, this couple is known for their examination of paranormal incidents.
The first Conjuring film dealt with a Rhode Island haunted house, which terrorized its owners in 1971. The film initially seemed more of a standard jump-scare horror story, but the enthusiasm of the audience made it one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time.
Then, the sequel arrived, this time set in London. The film The Conjuring 2 offers a real-life case that is truly dreaded. The Warrens take on a bigger challenge than the one in the first film. The sequel was a huge success and managed to surpass the box-office numbers of The Conjuring.
After a very long wait for Conjuring fans, the release of The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It is on its way. The film will hit HBO Max and theaters on June 4, 2021. This time audiences can expect something darker and bigger than the previous series.
In an interview with IGN, Chaves revealed the film while in the series would take the Warrens in a new direction, thereby allowing renowned paranormal investigators to move away from the outdated concept of haunted dwellings. Chaves also claims The Conjuring 3 will be the biggest and darkest of the series.
“It’s unearthing some very dark material. This is definitely a case where there are real consequences, there are real casualties,” Chaves said.
The new film will follow the trial of the killer Arne Johnson, who murdered his owner in 1981. After his arrest, Johnson became the first person in American history to claim demonic possession in defense. The case became known as the ‘Devil Made Me Do It’ case, hence the name was incorporated into the film’s title.
The case originally involved 11-year-old David Glatzel, who is believed to be possessed. His family contacted the Warrens and during an exorcism attempt on Glatzel, a friend of the Johnson family (who was present at the time) was said to have been possessed by a demon that resided within Glatzel.
It’s not uncommon for a director to convince audiences that his latest film will surpass everything they’ve done before. In the case of The Conjuring 3, Chaves wants audiences to know that now things are moving in a new direction for the franchise.
Fans of Wan and the style in particular may be nervous about the new direction, as well as the fact that someone else is now directing the Warrens’ adventure. Still, there’s no reason to think that Chaves isn’t capable of the franchise’s newest hit, and a move towards a bigger and darker terror sounds promising.

Horror fans may have been the most affected movie-goers of all during the worldwide closures of movie theaters. This may be a sign that cinemas are back, but who would have thought a horror sequel could have beat out Disney’s highly anticipated live-action remake, Cruella, for the biggest pandemic opening? This is also excellent news for the latest installment in The Conjuring franchise, which is set to premiere this week.
The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It will finally hit theaters nearly eight years after the original film left its indelible mark on the genre. The latest installment will again follow paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, as they take on a demonic possession defense case. The film faced pandemic-related production delays like just about every other movie and was originally scheduled for theatrical release in September 2020.
Now that movie theaters are open in some capacity in every state, you should be able to catch it in person and experience every jump scare in full effect. However, if you aren’t quite ready to venture past your couch, you won’t have to. Lucky for you, The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It will be accessible from there, too.
