Melanoma skin cancer is a disease that can occur anywhere on the individual’s body, like the neck, face, and arms. It generally occurs in our cells that produce melanin. Melanin gives our skin its color. Melanoma cancer can spread quickly to other body parts, including the liver, lungs, and brain.

The treatment option for melanoma cancer includes radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, and targeted therapy. Early detection is the key; therefore, it is essential to get your skin tested at skin cancer screenings Fort Worth regularly for any changes and observe any suspicious spots evaluated by your doctor.

What to know about melanoma skin cancer

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that begins in melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin). It is considered the most serious type of skin cancer, accounting for 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths. It is generally caused by the cumulative effect of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The risk factors are sunburns, fair skin, a family history of melanoma, and skin having a larger number of moles.

Early diagnosis can often treat cancer. It is most effective when the cancer is caught in its early stages before it spreads to other body parts.

To identify unusual moles indicating melanoma or other skin cancers, think about the letters ABCDE.

    1. A for asymmetrical shape

Observe for moles that have irregular shapes, like two different-looking halves.

    1. B for irregular border

Moles with scalloped, irregular, or notched borders are characteristics of melanomas.

    1. C for changes in color

Observe for mole growths with different colors or irregular distribution of color.

    1. D for diameter

Observe for mole growth larger than ¼ inch (around six millimeters).

    1. E for evolving

Observe for changes, like if the mole grows in size or changes its color or shape. Moles can also evolve to develop new symptoms and signs, such as bleeding or itchiness.

Melanoma cancer moles vary significantly in appearance and show every change listed above, while some may show one or two characteristics.

Melanomas can also occur in your body areas with little to no sun exposure, like the places between toes and palms, scalp, or genitals. They are sometimes known as hidden melanomas because it occurs in places most people will not think to check. When melanoma happens in darker skin people, it mainly occurs in a hidden area.

It is best to make an appointment with your doctor if you suspect any unusual skin changes.
