Why are Shiba Inus Popular Dogs?

It wasn’t that long ago that shiba inus were a rare and largely unknown breed throughout much of the world. But internet popularity has catapulted one of Japan’s most distinctive dog breeds directly into the global spotlight. It’s an exciting change too, as shiba inus have a whole lot to offer. These dogs aren’t perfect — and what would be the fun if they were? — but there are plenty of reasons why people invite shiba inus into their home.

    Big Mind, Little Body

Most of us have met that dog the size of a horse that insists on trying to climb in your lap. Shiba inu have the opposite sensibilities. Despite being modestly sized, these dogs have the personalities and sensibilities of a much bigger dog. Their prey instincts are strong, and that translates into a strong need to run, hunt, and play.

If you want a dog that’s going to keep you active but you’re worried that a breed like a labrador or pitbull might be too much for you to handle, a shiba inu might be exactly what you need. They’ll stay engaged with you and can stay active for quite some time before they start to get tired.

    A Distinct Look

While it may resemble a spitz, the shiba inu cuts a unique profile that’s all its own. Its face and ears give off the resemblance of a fox, though it has many of the features of a wolf as well. The results are a noble-looking beast that can definitely stand apart from almost any other dog at the park. If you want a breed that will have people around you talking, a shiba inu is always a good way to go.

    Great With Families

There are few dogs as loyal as a shiba inu. While they can be stubborn and strong-headed, they’re fiercely devoted to their owners, and that extends to children as well as adults. If placed in a family where the children are raised to be respectful, a shiba inu is going to thrive and create strong bonds with every member of the family group.

    Exceedingly Clever

The shiba inu is a very smart dog, although that can be something of a double-edged sword. While all individual dogs have their own personalities, shiba inu are well-regarded for their razor sharp minds and their mischievous senses of humor. Being the parent of a shiba inu can be frequently exhausting, but it’s also a delight to see what sort of fresh adventures your shiba’s curiosity will lead them on.

That does mean that shiba inu can be hard to train, but it’s certainly not impossible. You merely have to be patient and sometimes employ sneakier measures to convince your shiba that obedience training is in their best interest. A well-trained shiba inu can be a loyal and effective companion, even if it might take a little longer for them to get there.

Is a Shiba Inu Right For You?

There are plenty of reasons to pick a shiba inu, but that doesn’t mean that they’re necessarily going to be the right dog for you. Consider how much energy you have to care for them. A shiba inu requires a parent that’s strict and consistent, as a shiba will take advantage of any opportunities for mischief they can find. But if you love an outspoken personality and aren’t afraid to exert some tough love now and again, a shiba inu could be the perfect fit for both families and individuals. They’ll be some of the most loyal companions you could have.
